Our Journey

Dr. Amishi Jha is a cognitive neuroscientist who began her career using advanced brain imaging tools to study the power of attention and working memory. But as her lab uncovered how vulnerable attention is—especially under stress—she was driven to find ways to strengthen and protect it. This pursuit wasn’t just professional; it was personal. Early in her career, while balancing the demands of academia, research, and raising young children, she experienced what she now calls a “crisis of attention.” Stress wasn’t something to be avoided—it was a constant. Mindfulness training became a turning point, offering real benefits in managing these pressures. Intrigued, she put mindfulness training to the test in her lab, investigating whether those in the most unforgiving environments—where failure wasn’t an option—could also benefit.

As an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, she launched her first research studies on mindfulness, just as she became increasingly aware of the immense cognitive and emotional challenges faced by military servicemembers, particularly those enduring repeated deployments. This realization led her to pioneer the first mindfulness training study with active-duty military personnel in 2010. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Jha has dedicated her research to developing, refining, and adapting mindfulness training programs to meet the specific demands of high-stakes professions, ensuring those who operate in the most high-pressure environments have the tools to sustain peak cognitive performance and emotional stability.

PMI was founded when Dr. Jha was asked by the Department of Defense researchers if she would be interesting in adapting the lessons and program in her book Peak Mind, into an app that could be distributed to DoD Servicemembers. Dr. Jha embraced the opportunity and Pushups for the Mind is the result of a two-year collaboration.

Delivering mindfulness training at scale remains a complex challenge. PMI is committed to continuously refining our products and services to be responsive to our clients’ feedback and evolving needs. As new discoveries emerge in brain science, habit formation, and mindfulness training, we intend to adapt and enhance our offerings to ensure that our clients receive the most effective, evidence-based education, training, and support available.

Products & Services

Pushups for the Mind.mil is our initial product offering. We plan to offer a version of Pushups for the Mind to individuals and non-military organizations in the near future. We are developing a facilitator training program, so that interested individuals within organizations can have the tools to bring mindfulness training to their colleagues. Dr. Jha also has limited availability for speaking engagements at organizational events. Her motivational keynotes speeches have moved many skeptics to attempt mindfulness practice on their own. And now with Pushups for the Mind, we offer an easy-to-follow training path that builds on these types of one-day events.
